Description: Tragedy struck the S.S. Eastland in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 24, 1915. It was planned to be the fifth annual Western Electric Company-Hawthorne Works Club picnic held at Michigan City’s Lakefront. Minutes after boarding 2,500 passengers, the Eastland rolled over on its port side in 20 feet of water in the Chicago River with one of its bowlines still tied to the wharf. Eight hundred forty-four people, including entire families, died that day, the greatest loss of life event in Great Lakes History.
Presenter: James Retseck is the past president of the Michigan City Historical Society and the Old Lighthouse Museum.
